Design for manufacturing, or DFM, brings manufacturing considerations into product design. The practical objective is to assess the product against the process that will make it before committing to decisions that are difficult to reverse. The discussion includes geometry, materials, inspection and economics, rather than simply reducing the number of parts.
A review is particularly useful when the prototype uses a different process from intended production, or when volumes, suppliers or configurations change. One working specimen does not demonstrate that the same solution will be straightforward to manufacture, assemble and inspect repeatedly. Those questions need their own review and recorded decisions.
State the process and volume assumptions
Start with a candidate process, material, indicative quantities and an identified design configuration. If these are still uncertain, compare scenarios rather than describing a design as universally optimised. An approach suitable for a few samples may need a different assessment once dedicated tooling and recurring batches are involved.
Autodesk describes DFM in terms of considering manufacturing capabilities, constraints and costs early. For a specific project, turn that principle into questions for the supplier: which operations are sensitive, which requirements affect the process and which features require particular inspection? Answers need to reference the design revision reviewed, so they are not inadvertently applied to a later, different configuration.

Ask questions specific to the manufacturing route
A single geometry checklist cannot cover every manufacturing technology equally. Manufacturing guidance is organised by process because the relevant constraints differ. The table suggests areas for an initial discussion; allowable dimensions and construction details then need agreement with the organisation that will make the part.
Do not automatically turn one supplier’s published capability into a universal specification. Material, equipment, fixturing, finish and measurement method can affect what is achievable. Resolve a DFM observation through a recorded decision, distinguishing a necessary change from an optional simplification. The design team should understand the consequence of accepting or declining a proposed change.

Review assembly and inspection alongside the part
Connect the individual part review to the complete assembly. An apparently simple component may need an orientation that is difficult to recognise, an inaccessible fastener or an adjustment that complicates assembly. Walk through the real operation and identify where mistakes or additional handling could occur, rather than reviewing the ideal assembled state alone.
Inspectability also needs attention before release. Define the reference, access and method for decisive characteristics. If a feature can only be measured before the assembly is closed, include that inspection point in the sequence. Involve people responsible for manufacturing and quality, and document where their feedback changes the design or the proposed method of making it.
Close each observation with a traceable decision
A list of problems is a starting point. Each observation needs its functional impact, considered options, decision owner and closure status. When geometry is changed to simplify production, check that the interface or performance requirement behind the original design is still met. A manufacturing improvement should not silently transfer a problem into another part of the product.
Before ordering tools or fixtures, the business should know what is resolved and what will be assessed during a pilot run. Include the cost of the change and its expected operational consequences, keeping estimates separate from measured results. A DFM review supports better decisions; it does not provide a universal guarantee of manufacturing cost, quality or a trouble-free production launch.
Define what suppliers need for the production handover
Agree the consulting scope around the maturity of the design. It may include an updated 3D model, drawings identifying functional characteristics, bills of materials and revision records, together with resolved and open DFM observations. File formats, materials, purchased components and inspection responsibilities need agreement before release.
For example, a 3D-printed enclosure may demonstrate the required envelope but still need closures, assembly sequence and geometry adapted to the final process. Manufacturer feedback makes those decisions concrete. Prepare a useful DFM review package

Should DFM wait until after the prototype?
No. An early review can influence the concept; a later review can use prototype findings and supplier feedback. The depth of the work should grow as the product and manufacturing process become better defined.
Does DFM always mean fewer parts?
No. Reducing part count can help some aspects while making manufacture, maintenance or replacement harder. Assess the choice against function, assembly, service needs and overall cost.
What deliverables can an industrialisation project include?
The scope may cover updated models, drawings, bills of materials, assembly information and DFM observations. Actual deliverables depend on the starting documents and production decisions to address, and are agreed for the project.
