A machine can manufacture parts correctly while its orders, quantities and operating states remain disconnected from business software. Studio Dinamico supports industrial machine interconnection through technical assessment, software development and integration of information flows. We start with what needs to reach the machine and what information must return to the people managing production.

For an Italian incentive, the technical requirement must be assessed against the specific measure and asset category. Implementing data exchange does not automatically establish every eligibility, safety, documentation or tax condition. This page describes the integration work and supporting evidence, separately from the full assessment of an incentive application.

What machine interconnection needs to demonstrate

Italian circular 4/E describes information exchange with business or supply-chain systems using documented, recognised specifications and unique identification of the asset. For the machine categories addressed in paragraph 11.1.1, it also discusses remote loading of instructions or programmes. An IP address, Internet connection or remote-support screen alone does not establish the required information flow.

An assessment should explain what information travels, between which systems, what it means and how it is used. Historical Industry 4.0 guidance provides technical context; a 2026 investment also needs the rules and asset lists of the actual measure being considered. Earlier incentive rates or procedures should not be transferred automatically to the new project.

Check interfaces and responsibilities before developing software

The initial assessment collects manufacturer, machine model, installed controller, available ports and protocols, licences and supplier documentation. On the business side, identify the applications involved, available interfaces and the person authorised to approve changes. Being able to read a value does not necessarily mean the machine can receive the instruction needed by the process.

Establish the boundary between information integration and machine control. Flows that write instructions or parameters need agreement with the manufacturer and the people responsible for automation. Network access and intervention arrangements should be coordinated with IT and production, including the operational windows available for configuration and testing.

Define a complete flow from the work order to the result

An illustrative project could send a work order from business software, identify it on the machine and return status, quantities and production reporting data. This scenario needs confirmation against the actual interfaces; it is not a mandatory architecture for every machine. Its operational value is the ability to reconcile the same job across the connected systems.

For each data item, define source, destination, identifier, unit, frequency and receipt acknowledgement. Include less visible cases such as an updated order, duplicate message, restart or network interruption. Before acceptance testing, agree who detects the error and how the exchange resumes without losing information or counting the same production twice.

Integrate existing capabilities and identify the missing pieces

Depending on the assessment, the work may involve an interface between existing applications, a data collection and transformation component or dedicated application functions. The choice depends on what the machine and business software expose. Before replacing an application, check whether its existing interfaces can support the required flow and identify the remaining limitations.

The scope should also identify external dependencies: manufacturer activations, licences, network settings, ERP changes or data availability. Agree acceptance criteria with technical stakeholders and the people using the process. Completion of the integration then corresponds to observable behaviour rather than the mere installation of a connector.

Test the flow and retain evidence of the implementation

The technical analysis model published by MIMIT asks for incoming and outgoing information, connected systems, protocols, device identification and evidence of checks. A useful file connects the architecture diagram, configuration and actual test. Screenshots help when they show the same event across the involved systems and include enough context to interpret the result.

Within the integration project, agree test cases, expected outcomes and records: transmission, receipt, use of the data and return of the result, as applicable to the chosen flow. Add the agreed failure-recovery tests and operating instructions. This documentation can support an appointed expert’s assessment; it does not replace the professional opinion required for any formal technical report.

Assess interconnection and incentive eligibility as separate questions

Interconnection is one requirement where the relevant measure calls for it. Asset category and characteristics, beneficiary, eligible cost, dates, communications and evidence still need assessment. Italy’s 2026 hyper-depreciation uses a specific GSE process with technical and accounting attestations: completing the software integration does not finish the tax procedure.

We can discuss the integration and the technical information relevant to an incentive assessment while keeping responsibilities clear. The scope should specify analysis, development, configuration, testing and documentation, together with checks assigned to the manufacturer, tax adviser or appropriately qualified professionals.

Prepare the machine integration discussion

  • Manufacturer, model, year and controller of each machine.
  • Available interface documentation and the supplier contact.
  • ERP and production applications to connect, with technical contacts.
  • Instructions to send and machine data to receive.
  • Operational problem to solve and the current data collection process.
  • Network constraints, available test dates and any Italian incentive being considered.

Common questions

Is a machine connected to the Internet already Industry 4.0 interconnected?

Connectivity alone does not demonstrate the requirement. Check identification, exchanged information, connected systems and the characteristics required for the relevant asset category and incentive.

Do we necessarily need to buy a MES?

The software choice depends on the intended flow and existing systems. First establish what the business applications already support and which interfaces they expose. A single prescribed application cannot suit every company.

Can existing machines be integrated?

Integration can be assessed using the installed controller, protocols, documentation and manufacturer support. Technical feasibility does not automatically mean the investment qualifies for an incentive.

Does collecting production data establish all the requirements?

No. Compare the implementation with the required exchange and asset category. Some machines also require relevant remote instructions or programme loading; other requirements need their own assessment.

Does an integration project automatically include a sworn technical report?

No. Analysis, integration, testing and supporting documentation have an agreed scope. Any formal report requires a separate defined appointment and a professional qualified under the applicable measure.
