The European Commission frames Industry 5.0 around people, sustainability and resilience. In a factory, these priorities connect the operator’s work, the use of resources and the ability to maintain or recover production when conditions change.

They become useful when applied to a specific problem: repeated manual entry, energy consumed by idle equipment or information missing during a breakdown. We select indicators that the people managing that process can understand, then agree how they will be used.

Start with a defined area and evidence you can check

The initial assessment maps the process and identifies equipment, energy uses and information systems. We establish what is already available: utility bills, meter readings, shift patterns, output figures, downtime reasons, maintenance records and accessible PLC or business-system data.

Lower total consumption can simply reflect lower production. We therefore define the comparison period and consider operating hours, product mix and other relevant conditions. Where the evidence is incomplete, the first improvement may be an additional measurement or a consistent way to record events.

For machine connectivity, we examine protocols, available information and integration with business systems. Access permissions, security, supplier involvement and installation windows enter the plan before implementation. This identifies what the existing equipment can support and which dependencies still need investigation.

Outputs you can use to commission the next step

We agree deliverables in the engagement according to the project’s scope. They should support investment and implementation decisions, with assumptions and limitations understandable to colleagues who were not present at every meeting.

  • A process and data map covering equipment, systems, manual handovers, available sources and missing information.
  • An initial indicator baseline with formulas, measurement units, reporting period and comparison conditions.
  • A prioritised intervention list showing dependencies, preliminary estimates where possible and effects on production activities.
  • A pilot specification defining signals to collect, intended integrations and acceptance criteria.
  • An implementation and verification plan assigning responsibilities, involving operators and checking performance after start-up.

An example: investigate consumption before replacing equipment

Consider a production area where compressed air remains on outside working shifts. This illustrates a method, not a client result. First compare operating schedules, available readings and essential uses; then identify a bounded area where measurements and an intervention can be tested without compromising production.

The subsequent comparison documents operating conditions and separates avoided consumption, load changes and project costs. That evidence informs the decision to extend the intervention. We do not assign a percentage saving without an adequate measurement basis.

Coordinate the improvement plan with Italian investment rules

An Industry 5.0 project does not automatically confer a universal certification or eligibility for public support. Technical merit and the conditions of any Italian incentive require separate assessment, including qualifying expenditure and the documentation required by that specific measure.

On our 9 September 2026 source review, Italy’s MIMIT states that applications for the previous Transizione 5.0 plan are closed and directs businesses to the new hyper-depreciation scheme. Prepare a focused discussion about your factory

  • Identify the production area and the main problem: energy, downtime, errors, delays or missing information.
  • List the equipment and software involved, even if some technical details are still unavailable.
  • Describe the data currently collected and the period covered.
  • Explain production constraints, suppliers to involve and your intended timetable.

Common questions

Do we need to replace our machinery first?

Not necessarily. We start with the existing equipment. Collecting data, connecting systems or improving a procedure may be the first priority. Replacement needs to be justified against the project’s requirements and business case.

Can we start without reliable production data?

Yes. The first step is to define what to measure and how often. The initial output may be a data collection plan; financial estimates remain explicitly preliminary until an adequate baseline is available.

Does the assessment qualify us for the Transizione 5.0 tax credit?

No. Technical work and tax eligibility are distinct assessments. MIMIT marks the previous plan as closed. New Italian investments require a review of the measures and procedures actually applicable to the project.

How long does the work take?

The timetable depends on the production areas, available records and any on-site measurement needed. Scope, deliverables and dates are agreed after the initial information review, distinguishing assessment from implementation.
